Binti Change Project: Empowering Young Women for Political Engagement
Program summary: The Binti Change project aimed to create a robust platform for young women, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds such as indigenous groups, ethnic minorities, and women with disabilities, to engage in political activities and decision-making processes. In Tanzania, young women often face cultural barriers, discrimination, and fear, which prevent them from fully participating in political spheres. The Binti Change project worked to break these barriers, empower young women, and encourage them to take on leadership roles, particularly in the Tanga and Morogoro regions.
By fostering leadership skills, providing networking opportunities, and facilitating mentorship, the project enabled young women to gain the confidence and tools necessary to navigate political spaces. The focus on inclusivity ensured that even those from the most marginalized communities, such as indigenous young women and women with disabilities, could actively participate in shaping their future through political engagement.
Key Objectives:
- Strengthen young women’s participation in political processes by empowering them with the leadership skills and confidence needed to take part in decision-making.
- Facilitate the creation of safe and supportive spaces for young women, including indigenous women and those with disabilities, to engage in political activities and leadership roles.
- Promote the inclusion of young women in leadership positions and political decision-making bodies at local, regional, and national levels.
- Address the cultural and societal barriers that hinder young women’s participation in politics and leadership, ensuring that they feel supported and encouraged to participate.
Impact and Outcomes: The Binti Change project has been a resounding success, with a lasting impact on the political empowerment of young women in Tanga and Morogoro regions. The project has helped break down cultural barriers and provided young women with the confidence and skills to engage in political activities. Key outcomes include:
Leadership Development:
- A total of 30 young women completed the leadership training, and many have gone on to take leadership positions in their schools, communities, and local political forums. These trained young women are now equipped with the skills to advocate for change, represent the needs of their communities, and take part in national decision-making processes.
Creation of Safe Spaces for Political Engagement:
- The formation of Voice Clubs in secondary schools has provided young women with ongoing support and a safe space to discuss political issues, engage in activism, and develop their leadership potential. These clubs continue to function as a resource for political education and action for young girls in the region.
Mentorship and Networking:
- The mentorship provided by the Nguvu ya Mwanamke network and the Tanzania Women Parliamentarians Group has been invaluable in fostering the next generation of women political leaders. Many participants have reported increased confidence in their political aspirations and a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of political engagement.
Enhanced Visibility for Young Women with Disabilities:
- Through collaboration with FUWAVITA, the project was able to highlight the specific challenges faced by young women with disabilities and advocate for greater inclusion in political decision-making spaces. This work has contributed to a growing awareness of the need for policies and support systems that enable women with disabilities to fully participate in leadership and political processes.
- Sustained Impact in Political Spaces:
- The young women involved in the project have continued to be active in local politics, advocacy, and leadership. Many have become role models in their communities, encouraging other young women to pursue leadership roles and actively engage in political processes. The project has empowered them to challenge the traditional gender norms and stereotypes that often exclude women from leadership positions.
